"[I]f you serve a child a rotten hamburger in America, federal, state, and local agencies will investigate you, summon you, close you down, whatever.  But if you provide a child with a rotten education, nothing happens, except that you're liable to be given more money to do it with."

The Founding Fathers assumed that any government, including the one they established, could grow into a monster. They argued that only "the people" with a right "to keep and bear arms" could prevent such a tyranny. – Larry Elder

On the wrong track?            By Theresa Camoriano

If you are like me, when you are asked whether this country is on the right track, you think of all the things that are going wrong and say “No.”  But that doesn’t really answer the question any more than does Obama’s promise of “change”.  We probably can all agree that there are many things wrong with the country that need to be changed, but, before we start changing or listing what is wrong, we first should assess what is right.  And when we look at matters from that point of view, we realize that there is an awful lot that is right with this country.  This is still the place many people want to come to live.  If people could vote with their feet, there would be an awful lot more feet coming to this country than going anywhere else in the world.            (click to read more)

Conservatives who will not vote for McCain are well-intentioned utopians. They are comparing McCain to a consistently conservative candidate. The reality, however, is that McCain is not running against a consistently conservative candidate. He is running against a consistently left-wing candidate. And America cannot afford to have its first leftist president ever. – Dennis Prager

America: Conceived in liberty derived from our maker             By Jim Waters

Where does freedom come from anyhow?

That's a good question for Kentuckians to ponder as they surfeit on hot dogs, slurp down whatever it is they slurp down and "ooh" and "ah" mindlessly as fireworks explode above this Fourth of July.

Along with these traditions, why not add to your revelry some education and entertainment that focuses on this question? Watch at least the first episode in a new HBO-produced series on "John Adams," based on David McCullough's recent book on the second president.             (click to read more)

Last week, when the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional the District of Columbia's ban on handguns, Obama immediately declared that he agreed with the decision. This is after his campaign explicitly told the Chicago Tribune last November that he believes the D.C. gun ban is constitutional. – Charles Krauthammer

ELECTION WOES (from a reader – source not confirmed)

Occasionally, I receive an email that I agree with so totally I want to pass the message to everyone on my list. This is one of those emails. I have approval from the writer to forward the attached, and feel free to post it on your websites, or forward to friends. The election of Obama as President of the United States will mark the apex, and beginning downslide of this Republic. The only question is the rate at which the downfall will occur.            (click to read more)

However the candidates choose to proceed, Americans should know that one of the founding fathers of Canada's government-run health care system has turned against his own creation. If Claude Castonguay is abandoning ship, why should Americans bother climbing on board? – David Gratzer

Richard Viguerie: Senator Jesse Helms Was the Leader of the New Right

(Manassas, Virginia) The following statement was released by Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, regarding the death of former Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC):

“Without Senator Jesse Helms, there may not have been a New Right.

“It was the New Right that energized and led the conservative movement in the 1970s and 1980s and our beloved leader was Senator Helms.            (click to read more)

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative

 and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and

 should do for themselves.

 Abraham Lincoln
