Using Taxpayer Money for Lobbying

By George Baumler

The recent article referring to Councilman Hawkins’ proposal that city agencies and departments be prohibited from using the taxpayers money to campaign or lobby for legislation was typical of the C-J's editorialized news stories.  Councilman Hawkins’ proposal in no way prohibits departments from making suggestions or proposals to the people elected to manage the purse strings, the city council.  What it does prohibit is the use of the taxpayers' money to campaign for enactment of ordinances, fee increases and other circumventions of the legislative process.

Imagine the Socialist-Democratic Party outrage if taxpayer dollars were used to fund a campaign advocating right to life legislation, income tax reduction or (shudder) pro-firearms ownership legislation.  The current abuse of the taxpayers' money should stop immediately.  Any money misappropriated for use in issue campaigns, such as controlling legal behavior in private business and residences etc. should be returned to the anemic Louisville Metro treasury posthaste.
